Cape, shawl pattern with hand slits, any ideas????????

I'm trying to find a cape, shawl pattern, knit or crochet, that has slits to stick your hands out of. I'm thinking this might be more of a vintage type pattern since I haven't seen this type of, cape, shawl in years. I wanted to make one for my moms 80th birthday. This would be an easier garment for her to wear since she could stick her hands out of the slits to do whatever she needs to do as opposed to sticking them out the bottom. Does anyone have any ideas.........

Thanks again ladies for all of you great ideas. Here's a picture of the finished project. We celebrated mom's 80th birthday this passed Saturday and I gave her the shawl. she absolutely loved it! I've also posted a side and rear view of it in my pics.

Thanks everyone for your great suggestions. I've decided to go with the Aran Toggle Wrap pattern by Red Heart. I'm using TLC cotton yarn so that it can be worn comfortably on a cool summer night instead of the Red Heart Super Saver yarn as was suggested. I'm almost done with it and will post pics when I finish. I am surely going to add all your suggestions to my pattern catalog, Thanks again.
Here's the link for the pattern I chose:

funny you should mention looking for slitted shawl. April issue of "yarn forward" has a great one w/cables and seed st. on the cover... It's shown in red and is a rectangle w/slits for arms which makes it look kind of 'vesty'.... so many projects, so little time!

hi ihave an idea just make your cape and when you put it together measure where your hans are going to be and make an oping that looks like a pocket.
this might help out.
or go to a dress tsore and look at there slits.

There is a crocheted cape on Lionbrand.com.....It is a Thick and Quick pattern #VK25capeAD..Most other ones I came across are caplets, which are shorter. If you Go on knittingpatterncentral.com and search for capes a whole page comes up of ponchos and capes and capelets.
