I finally visted a little yarn shop not too far away from my new apartment. I was puzzled as I stepped in the door, as I was presented with many, MANY, cones of fiber on the shelves. This store is called Yarnia, a DIY yarn store. Unfortunately, online I think they only sell their premade cones. Their website:
http://yarniapdx.com/index.htmlI stuck around for a while examining my choices, and I figured this place was going to end up being expensive, but I'd give it a shot anyway.... my financial aid just came in so I probably had about $3,000 in my bank account so what would $20 or so hurt? I started picking out some yarns, and I was captivated by the hemp they had in stock. Unfortunately I realized the hemp fibers were very thin and wouldn't have much stretch to them once I knitted them up (I wanted to make a hat!). Plus, I wanted to work with a worsted-weight yarn, and I found most of the fibers they have are rather thin. I asked for some help to bulk up my yarn, so it ended up being mostly wool, with a few hemp strands. They have pretty much anything you could ask for over there! I pretty much spent an hour in there looking for the perfect yarns to combine because there are just so many choices to choose from! They had a lot of samples of things that have been made from their yarns too, and because you're choosing your fibers, they become very varigated and colorful, sometimes tweedy looking.
Here is my finished product:

it's 2 strands white wool, 1 strand grey wool, 1 thread dark green wool, and 2 strands light green hemp.
I can't wait to knit something up with it!
and the cool thing about it, was that it was cheaper than I thought it would be... although i chose rather cheap fibers. (150 yards was $8.80)
my hat will be much more personal to me once finished too, because i picked out the yarns for it :)
I'm thinking of bringing my boyfriend to this shop and having him pick out the yarns, and then i will make him something out of the colors he chooses :) then it will mean even more to him <3
