I'm working on a baby blanket that has squares of duckies.  The pattern is based on a grid, changing colors as the grid pattern shows.  I like the simplicity of the single crochet design, and don't mind dropping colors as often as needed.  My question is this - can anyone suggest an easy way to clean up all the loose ends of the dropped colors?  I end up with many, many hanging strings and am afraid if I don't knot them the design will fall apart the first time it's washed.  Then I have to weave in the ends because if I cut them at the knot it would leave bumpy spots all over the design.  There's got to be an easier way to do this...any suggestions?  Thanks!

I use a yarn needle and tuck them under or hold them under and crochet over them as I go along.
I just use a blunt needle and weave the ends in. They honestly don't come out if you weave far enough. If you do one square at a time as you finish it, it won't seem overwhelming. I do chemo caps and always plan on spending 20 minutes sewing in my ends. I would love to see your finished project!
Here's the finished product.  I will never, ever attempt another grid project on this scale.  All the weaving in of the ends took the joy out of the project, and made it excruciatingly slow.  At least it came out cute!
You might want to read how people knitting Fair Isle sweaters and Intarsia knits make "bobbins" of colors so they don't cut the yarn when they change colors.. they just pick up the new color when it's time and carry the background color under the other color. I really does work. Then at MOST you have only 2 ends.. start and finish of each color.
