When I started knitting 2 years ago I got the garter stitch scarf thing down pat. Finished a few beanies and winter hats. Working w/ dpns was a little intimidating. Like knitting with a spider but I pressed on.

Then my sock addiction began! My first attempt was just practice. I used size 7 dpns and red heart black acrylic (yick) I guess due to the new technique I was way to tight w/ tension. What I produced was a long black skinny snake thing with a broken neck. (do snakes have necks?) Even my tall, skinny DH couldn't fit it over his foot/leg.

It was good practice for heel flap/turning. Kitchner was another thing all together :o/ But, found a great tutorial online that went step by step in the sock building process.
(I was going to add a link to the tutorial but I guess it's been taken down)

So far I've completed 10 pairs. 4 of which were socklets/anklets/footies.(1pr of footies I gave to my DD. She said they made her look like she had WHO feet) 2 more pair are in the sock process. 1.5 pairs of maidenhair fern lace on super skinny lace/fingering yarn that is way unruly. The other pair I'm working on is for my diabetic dad. The first sock is at the toe decrease stage, other sock is in skein form.

All the sock yarns out there, they are soooo tempting. Handpainted, self-stripping, tweeds, ahhhh the list goes on.

I've not tried the magic loop method, toe up, 2 circs, or 2 at a time. I guess I'm a "safe" knitter. Most of my sox are documented on my photos page.

If you're just starting out on your sock journey, take your time, relax, start with a good size needle and pattern using worsted yarn. At least for practice.

good advice but cannot get hang of double pointed needles..
I first learned socks on 2 circulars...Now I use circulars for everything. I have even taught a seasoned knitter how to do socks on circulars. With kids in the house and most of my knitting on the go, I don't think I would have been as successful with socks. I cannot count how many pairs I have made, they are all my family wears and who knows how many I have given as gifts. I am like an addict when it comes to the sock yarn in the stores. I have been told I have enough to start my own shop...but I couldn't part with a single skein...I love to see how the patter reveals itself!

I learned from the book "Socks Soar on 2 Circular Needles" (or something like that...been so long I couldn't even tell you where my book is anymore)
