Truth be told, I don't currently have a doggie. :(  However, plan to get another female Miniature Schnauzer in 2010 and want to be ready with patterns and yarn!  (Have needles, of course)! :0)

Also, would appreciate if anyone knows of place here, on Ravelry, wherever, that I might learn how one measures one's doggie for custom fit sweaters and outfits (eg Halloween Costumes and Christmas ~ elf and Santa)! :0)

Now that my daughter, Stephanie (24) is grown and a mom herself (my grandson, Levi, is 23 months), my doggie(s) will truly be my child(ren)! LOL!  (Truth: Always have been.  Shhh, don't tell my "Baby" Girl! lol)!

Also, I live on Peninsula in SF Bay Area, and am looking to start (or join) a group of crocheting/(knitting) to share conversation and our craft(s)!

I'm a newbie here, so please bear with me as I get my bearings and the lay of the land.

Thanx!

Here is my free dog sweater tutorial- very simple ad you custom fit it to your dog!

Be sure to let me know if you have any questions!!!
Meant to add- and cannot for the life of me figure out why the edit button won't click- a video we did to show how to measure. HERE

It will be a little hard to crochet when you don't know the size, though I have done ones for puppies on spec and they usually turn out pretty close. This is an easy pattern- I can make a plain sweater for my little rat terrier in about 4 hours, so maybe practice making graduating sizes (if you plan to get a puppy). I think I know someone who has a Mini Schnauzer- would you like me to get them to measure? Won't be perfect, but would be close!
I have a Yorkshire Terrier, Cooki, she is almost 7 (7/26) and weighs 11 lbs....yes, she is large for a Yorkie, but very lovable. Any smaller my husband and oldest son would not enjoy her as much as they do. I would like to make this sweater for Cooki and be ready for our cool weather here in FL. Thanks for sharing your ideas and pattern.
Here is (IMO) one of the simplest crocheted dog sweater pattern I've found - http://www.crochetnmore.com/dogsweater.htm

Lots of photos, too, and advice on customizing the size for your dog.

Good luck!
there is a book called "crochet that fits" I used this style of crochet to make a sweater for my dachshund. If you measure your dog from the neck to 3/4 way down its back you can use the style of this book to custom fit the sweater easily just by adjusting stitch length. the item is crocheted in back loops only and is crocheted lengthwise as opposed to from the bottom or the top. It makes a delightful pattern on its own. and just by adjusting from sc to dbl c and even trb c you can make bands for the neck and the bottom that will self rib. or you can band it and add multiple longer stitches and have a flounced skirt....as far as the arm holes (leg) you create your length of the opening just by chaining the length of the opening...then on your next row crochet into those just like crocheting onto the main garment I found it easiest to crochet a few rows first to get your banding the way you like...then prepare for the the legs continue row by row until you get to where the other leg should be. then you just go row by row until you know it fits you can actually try the garment on the dog like a coat before you seam it up with a simple mattress stitch....I do go back and single crochet around the leg holes for just a more finished look

Another pic for this sweater is on my page with my sweet sweet Suki-lulu..  Fast easy crochet!  I used (less than) one skein of camouflage yarn and trimmed in black. Here is a variation from www.crochetpatterncentral.com; a GREAT site:

Happy hooking!
