I spin alpaca, merino, silks... I am trying to get my 'teacher' on the site. She has been spinning for 35 years and I have been her 'student' for about 10.
I am spinning a new "stretched" merino that acts like silk from Chameleon Colorworks...amazing stuff!!

I spin wool - all types, cashmere, alpaca, and silk/wool blends. I had sheep until last year, so have a lot of fleece to spin yet. Loved the merino I got as a gift from some Aussies at a conference in D.C. many years ago. Have 3 spinning wheels, Loet, a repo slant breast wheel, and an upright handcrafted in New Zealand in the late 60's. Also can use a drop spindle but still trying to get consistent with it.
Wow! I am impressed. I just got my new Candian wheel...I am calling it "Harley" because it is one "bad wheel". Super fast compared to my Lendrum that I have had for the past 10 years. My fingers have to work so fast...can't just casually sit back and spin with a nice long draw...my fingers are on overdrive constantly. My mentor tells me that I will get used to it...just need my own 'breaking in' period. My breaking, not the wheel...it is over 80 years old and has plently of use to break it in.
How do you like your New Zealand wheel? I almost bought one off of Ebay. Like the cute look of them. I found a great drop spindle off of ebay from "Viking Santa"; he makes wonderfully light spindles for about 20.00...excellent craftsmanship.
Sorry about the delay time. I need to take a picture of this wheel. It was purchased by a military couple on assignment to New Zealand during the early 60s. They attended a craft fair and she was impressed with the spinning etc. section of the fair. Her thoughts were to learn to spin. Well, she didn't have any instruction, but kept the wheel for the next 30+ years. We found the ad in the Omaha World Herald.Called and went to the house. I didn't even hesitate. Bought the wheel, matching spinners stool and niddy noddy.. There is a company from NZ that manufactures wheels. I think this is one of his early wheels. Don't quote me on that. kkd
In the last month or so, I've spun fine wool tops, merino & silk tops, angora & silk, baby camel & silk all in the same dye ways for a project. I really will be really glad to spin something a different colour. but it has been great fun.
What is on my wheel at the moment is some superwash merino that I dyed using wilton food coloring. I'm spinning a green and red together. It gives me a candy cane effect. Makes me wonder what it will look like when I ply it. :) I have two wheels, an Ashford Traveller and a Baynes. Can you tell I love the castle wheels :P. Someday, when I get rich :P, I would love to have a Golding wheel, custom made. :)
I purchased an amazing Canadian wheel from a spinner in Michigan. I love it!! I am working on a fleece I purchased. I enjoy going thru the entire process at least once a year. I like using the wilton...if you spin at a fine grist then you might find when you ply you will have a neutral effect since green and red are complimentary colors that when you blend them they go brown/grey...pretty effect. But if you have spun thicker then you might find "pop" in your colors. Both are nice! Have fun plying.

Silk and alpaca. Just started. Really slippery. Will keep working. kkd
I finally finished the red and green roving. I am now spinning some lucious baby alpaca, oooooh soooo soft!! It is going to be a shawl for myself. I have only made myself one other thing in all the years I've been knitting, so I thought, yep,it's time to make myself something for the coming fall and winter. The peace that soft fiber brings as I spin it will be a wonderful bonus. :)
My favorite to spin has been Merino. Although I got my hands on some angora merino mix that was just yummy. http://www.ravelry.com/people/Mintdee/stash/angel-wings For those with Ravelry a picture :)
