I would like to find out whether or not I would like to add spinning to my list of hobbies. Where would I go for lessons with a rented/borrowed wheel?

Check with your nearest local yarn store. They may offer classes. Alpaca Direct has classes in Brentwood, CA but you are not even in the same STATE! If you want to try out using a drop spindle while looking for a classes that teaches on a wheel, check out this video to learn how.

A spindle isn't a big investment just to try it out

I love spinning on the wheel or with the turkish drop spindle Iwouls encourage any one to try it and You tube is very helpful when in need of a reminder as to how or learning a new thing. :) have fun!
I have been spinning for sevral years now and am self taught. My suggestion is to learn on a spindle first, this really gives you the best practice in drafting which is an integral part of the whole process. It also is far less expensive, so if you find its not your thing, your arnt out much, and if anything you now have a great home decor peice, lol. Make sure you get some quality roving also, this makes all the diffrence. There is a plethra of You Tube vidios out there to help learn, then practice makes perfect, good luck and have FUN!!!
Thanks for the wise advise! I'll give it a whirl...or should that be spin :-)
I am going to my LYS this weekend and I am leasing or renting a wheel and I get a lesson and roving for $40.00. I have a wheel but it has never worked right and the one that I am renting is an Ashford so it should be good. Good Luck, Libby
Hi Sandra. You could look in your area for a Spinners Guild. There are a lot of people who go to those and will teach you how to spin and possibly allow you to use one of their spinning Wheels to try. I belong to a guild and we have a spinning wheel that we rent out for a minimal amount. I went to my first meeting 4 years ago and learned alot from the ladies who also belong. We have several workshops and we ask each other how to do things. Several have sheep herds, llamas, goats, alpaca etc. We have a good supply of fiber to purchase from other members. Good Luck.
