I have used the hot water method, but I don't put the needles in the water--just the plastic.

You have to put them in some hot water for a few minutes. Do not microwave any of them, even the acrylic ones. I agree, I hate when they boing back when knitting. The heat from your hands is supposed to relax them. First boil the water. After a tiny bit dip the coil part in the very hot water and let sit for just a little bit. Lay it out straight. If it isn't enough, leave it in longer. This was a tip on Ravelry the other day. I hope it helps you.

That's what I do and its worked fine for me.  Its maddening to have to fight with the cord of your needles while youre trying to work on a project.  And if its something light the needles never stop fighting you.
I am so glad that I was not alone.  I have knitted for years with circular needles and struggled with the coiling of the circular part.  I read somewhere to soak the plastic part in hot water and then shape them gently with your hands...or rather "uncoil" them gently!  IT WORKED BEAUTIFULLY and has changed every set I own!  Good luck!
