its the stich that looks like a big shell that you can make into rows and add to other projects but i have no idea what its called to find it lol it looks like flower pedals. my great grandma made rows and would add them to her afghans. shes long gone or i would just ask the woman lol.
I think you may be refering to the fan stitch. It is just like the shell stitch and its some even use them interchangeably. the stacking effect you are seeing above is just because of the front loop only stitching. I think the difference is in how you apply the stitches. does this look like what you are trying?
Same stitch - only you chain between them skipping matching stiches, on the next row you place the fan stitch in the space created by the chain. Or you can fan stitch skip appropriate number of stitches (usually 2) then sc to next stitch, skip stitches and fan stich again. Next row you fan stitch in the sc and sc to the center of the fan stitch. Either of these patterns will create the alternating style you describe. However, they will be two different looks. The chaining will be loose and open like lace work. The SC stitch style will be denser and more firm- perfect for scarves and baby blankets.
